Mary Erickson, Fishlake National Forest Supervisor, and Kurt Robins, District Ranger on the Loa and Teasdale Ranger Districts, lead a group of 16 people on horseback and about half as many hikers up the Pelican Canyon Trail. The group had some interesting discussions about the proposed backcountry area. We’d like to hear what you have to say about that day or about the proposed special area designation we have for this area. We welcome your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions here.

We went on a field trip today to visit the proposed Little Creek Backcountry area on the Cedar City Ranger District. In the next week we will be posting some comments from Forest Service staff who were on the field trip. If you went (there was a group of about 30 scheduled to attend), we’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas about the area.

On September 12, we will be horesback riding/hiking into the area we have recommended for additions to the Pine Valley Wilderness. The Washington County Commission will be joining us on this little endeavor. We are excited to hear what folks have to say about our recommendation. As with all our field trips, the boundaries we have recommended are not magical and we hope to get much more insightful information to refine our recommendations.

Meet at White Rocks Trailhead. The plan is do a loop from White Rocks Trailhead to the Pinto Spring Trailhead.

If you plan to come, please RSVP to me at (435) 865-3730. Bring your own horse, bring your own lunch. It should be a real fun day, but a lot of hard work.

One comment we have heard from a few different sources on our MDP version 1.0 is that some people are surprised that the Boulder Mountain area didn’t make our special areas section. Currently, this area (along with the Fishlake Basin) is highlighted as a popular recreational area in the geographic areas section of our MDP.

In order to explore this area further and to discuss the options we have for managing the area, it has been proposed that we attempt to do a field trip to the Boulder Rim country.

Heavy rain fell in the Pine Valley areas on Saturday and Sunday the weekend before we had scheduled a field trip with the Washington County Commission to visit the area north of the existing Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness that we are recommending for addition to the existing wilderness. Some people had planned to ride horses into the area. Trail conditions precluded us from making a safe trip by horseback. Because it was too late to cancel effectively, we decided to reschedule (date to be decided still) the horseback trip.
